I heard you like pictures of logs...
« on: May 30, 2016, 02:34:57 pm »
... and I found a yew. It had been cut by some loggers a few days before I found it just lying forgotten there. Apparently it became collateral damage when they cut down a boring old spruce. Having no idea that a yew can be useful they let it there for me to take. :D

Oh, sorry, I had too austere a privacy setting set on the album; it should work now.

Ah, the hilarity of austerity!

Nice wood, bro!

I wish I was that lucky, having American and English woods is just a dream here in Brazil, unless I import them myself and pay an awful amount of money for a few staves /boards.

Nice. Definatly a bow in there. Wide rings, second growth perhaps? Not sure if I'd rip it that way but pics are decieving.

With the grape vine and retaining wall and dandelions I thought it was my backyard!

You're right, however it's native from the Amazonian rainforest and mostly only the natives (indians) have access to it.. Plus, I heard it doesn't mantain enough tension stress for modern draw lengths (28"+)

Astrocaryum standleyanum or Astrocaryum chonta.
Really, saw a picture of a short bow made from it, looked like it was bending a lot...

And sometimes they can get longer... I think I saw one cable backed. I just saw one that looked like it was cable backed in the lower limb but not in the upper.

They seem to come in all sorts of lengths, I saw some taller than the archers. I'm sure they could reach 32"..
Sorry for the topic derail

@loon , looks like you got a point there, but again, unfortunately it's mostly available to the natives only, because of their reserves etc..
