when to pull to goal weight?
« on: April 17, 2016, 11:51:04 pm »
Hi all, Got a good start on a yew maple backed board bow 60"ntn stiff handle 1.5"w at fades hold to mid limb taper to 1/2" tips, pretty standard dimensions. Right now the tips are moving about 6-7"  its pulling 35 lbs at 15" with a 3" brace. Was wondering when do you guys start pulling board or stave bows to your goal draw weight? say 50#.  Thanks Chuck

Not till i get to fd, i only stay on the tree to 20-22" and finish stretching it out as i shoot it in
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

I pull the bow far enough to see any problems. If I see a problem I stop pulling and fix it. If I don't see any problems and the tiller looks perfect then I will pull it out to the target draw weight. If you wait too long to get to the target weight for no reason then you risk coming in under weight. I agree with Bubby that it's a good idea to ditch the tree at a certain point and finish the tillering by hand drawing it. sometimes the tiller tree doesn't tell the same truth as actually drawing the bow.

You should be pulling target weight straight away from floor tiller.
Not pulling full weight once braced is a sure fire way to come in underweight.

+1.
If you keep pulling 35#...guess what?
You'll end up with a 35# bow!

You may want to read this... it's a bit wordy but does explain why you need to pull full weight.

As long as it is bending even I draw all the way to full draw weight every time between scraping off wood.

Pulling to full weight right away is a viable technique. Getting target weight is insured.

I used to haul of and pull to full draw right away and then, after listening to Jim Fetrow, I changed.

Who says I can't change? :)

For a 26" draw, I now get to about 40-43# at 20 inches  and then ease it to 47-50# at 25 inches and shoot it to 26 inches and high 40's after sanding.

So, no, my bows don't see target weight until  later on in the draw.
