How stable is Hazel? I just roughed out a piece(Thanks Top Predator) and I'm wondering if I should strap it down or just give it the run of the shop?

And I've got both.
After I started this post I was roughing out the second half of the stave. I got about 3' into the cut and noticed the far end of the kerf had opened up about 3". Still think I should be brave?
