Yep, this one is still alive, all the roots are exposed but still green on the fallen canopy. This has got another good couple of feet or more on it before it becomes the new canopy but I cut it off in the pic, its not going anywhere so I'll try and grab it late Febuary-January. It's got a fair amount of canopy tangled with other trees but hopefully I can get it out swifly and easily without too much fuss or attention.

My vote is Hazel also- though the wood looks different from what im used to seeing too! But you should find loads of live Hazel about and it really is the best wood to get started with (in the UK at least) It seasons really quick, is easy to work and  you can get really good bows out of it (if you treat it right!). That Yew branch looks perfect. Take that home and this time next year you'll have a great peice(s) of wood to play with! :-)

Thanks sieddy, there is a lot around here, I will have to look out for some.

I do like the yew   :)
