here's an exaggerated platform:

note how it sits below center-line of the edge you'd be working?

this shows the underlying ridge material/mass. the ridge-line essentially indicates the orientation that you'd like to align your tine with.

here is how i would try to support this piece for the removal. note how i try not to allow the ridge to come into contact with the palm of my hand.

and here is where the tine would make contact (after abrading):

continue with inward pressure (into the ridge) until the platform gives.

please excuse my plastic tine. it's the eraser end of my pen for my wacom tablet.

I used a different tine.

cool.

yeah. i don't have many tines in my tool kit yet. but i do know that i can't flake with one of them. even though i've tooled the end to look like the one i normally use. i'm guessing it has a different density or something.

two small ones. The one on the right I haven't really finished yet. The gray one was bigger. it broke but saved it.
My biggest problem is nerve damage in neck and arms. I can't do too much for a long time. Bad pain if I do.

^^ great progress.

i would attempt to continue scarring that gray one so that the scars match the opposing edge. you'll lose a little width, but it looks like you have a great series going on that edge.

in regards to the nerve damage, learn to compensate with other parts of your body, e.g. your legs can help exert lots of force while your hands align your piece/tool with said force. if you make an ishi stick, you can also use your torso.

good luck with the one on the right. can't wait to see it complete. that is some amazing veining.

Another way to get longer flakes is to press straight into the point with a bit of force right on the edge then while pressing in peel the flake down. It looks like your not placing your tine on the edge but up a bit more. That'll usually result in a short chip. It's good to do on the opposite side of a ridge so then you can flip it over and remove the whole ridge in one go. I'll post a picture later to illustrate. I can't draw nearly as well as Iowa.
