Getting some pear wood, q's
« on: October 06, 2015, 10:44:19 am »
I'm cutting down my sisters "standard" pear tree this weekend. I'm sure the bark is stuck by now. My question for you fruit tree pro's. Should I leave the bark on and fight it off later? Or, fight it off now? I plan on billets only. Not wanting to play with twisted up full staves in a year.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Pear bark really sticks. Just my 2 cents.
If you always do what you always did you'll always get what you always got.

Chris, I assume it is green wood from a living tree.
Pear want to check easily. I leave the bark on, seal ends immidiately.
Let dry it slow, at least the first half year. When working on the bark can removed with a sharp drawknife til cambium. When cambium should be off, soak it with wet cloth and it can be scraped easily.
Pear is nice and good bow wood, hard to find non twisted staves.

Good luck

It is a green, live tree. I have looked over the tree many times and cant find any full length stuff Id use. So I plan to cut 36" billets anywhere I can. Thanks for the advice guys.

Something I discovered the other day may or may not help. I was steaming a green Doug Maple and after about 15 minutes the bark actually fell off. I tried the other half of the split and the bark was stuck fast. So I steamed that half and the bark came right off. Cleanest back I've ever seen. The steam may dry the pear too much but it may work.

I'll have enough to experiment. If I ruin 4 sets to get one bow, Ill be happy. Its nothing more than a quest or goal for me. Osage and yew are the best and always will be. I wouldn't take a pear bow into the mountains hunting with me, matter of fact I wouldn't take anything but osage with me. :)

I only put one layer of shellac on the ends and debarked back of the one plum stave I've had and regretted it the next day :o My problems were similar to the only piece of scotch broom I've harvested.

Might as well make them short, save some wood to keep warm.
