Recycling!
« on: August 29, 2015, 05:24:39 pm »
So I decided I didn't want to let the first bow that JonW sent me go to waste. Instead, I'm gonna turn it into a kid's bow for my niece. I figured I'd do it like a build-along because I've never done one yet. Well enough yammering. Here goes.

All I got accomplished today was cutting the break off and cutting loose and reattaching the handle area. Not much explanation needed, so here are the pics.

First, a before pic with my niece.

And the rest.

Had some pretty bad gaps in the glue line. I guess I didn't have enough clamping pressure, so I popped it off with heat and re-did it with c-clamps this time. Hopefully I did a better job. I didn't take any pics.

Ok, Here's my progress for today. I removed the clamps and cleaned up and rough shaped the handle

Then I laid out the new profile on the back and worked down close to the lines.

And finally, I further refined the handle and took the limbs to a rough floor tiller with my belt sander. Here's a side profile. I don't have a pic of it bending, 'cause there's no one around to take one.

I probably won't do much more today, but I'm gonna try to get this one done pretty quick. In case anyone is interested, I'm shooting for 15#@17". The bow will be 40" ntn with about a 6 1/2" handle area and 1 1/4" wide for about 2/3 of the limbs tapering to 1/4" tips.
If anyone one has any thoughts or critiques, I welcome them.

Hopefully that bit of Osage will appreciate being given a second chance and will behave itself this time.
Always good to re use, a lot of the work has already been done.
