After cutting mine out it has gained over 2" of reflex from where it started, so its at 3 1/4" right now,n will prob gain a teeny bit more.

Nice job fellers! Pappy that stave is looking nice right out of the box. Mine is just sitting there in the dark basement on a slow dry. I'll rough out a bow in 6-8 weeks after it loses the bulk of moisture.

Ya  Chris I probably should have waited but I use to do them this way a lot and just couldn't help myself, was in the mood so I just went for it. :) I sometimes get really busy in the spring and summer and don't want  next August to slip up on me. ;) :)

I headed into the woods Saturday morning with a whole group, and ended up cutting down a pretty straight elm that yielded two sections.  Paul Semp earned "front of the line" access to my beer tap by helping me hall them a 1/4 mile back to camp.  I believe I got the better end of that deal, thanks Paul!!

My logs peeled like bananas and the bark came off in one peace.  I plan to make a quiver that will be included with my bow for the raffle table.

Here are some pics that Pappy took of me debarking my logs, and I also took some pics of Matt, Pappy and others working on their logs.

As I make progress I'll post more pics to this thread.  I will also be asking a lot of questions because this will be my first white wood bow.

Laid out the rough shape on the stave peeled like an onion and cut it out.  Parallel limbs all the way to the tips to start with.  Then I clamped her to one of my bow blank forms and put in my hot box.  I'm keeping the box lid open an inch or two so as not to cook it too quickly.  Scaled down to two 100 watt bulbs instead of the usual four.  I'll post a pic tonight.

Took the Kids bow off the drying form this passed weekend, it is looking really nice with good reflex and straight as an arrow, the larger on is doing well also but will require a little tweaking
so I put it back for another month of drying time. ;) :)

I still have my elm split into halves and I was wondering if you think it's too late to do a quarter split, rough in and clamp to a form.  Not sure it there would be an advantage at this point.

I checked on mine yesterday. Its peeled and still in the round. No checks on the ends or sides, sure feels lighter though. That's what I love about our basement. Its always 45-60% humidity, 65 degrees and dark year round. Wood dries great down there.

Mine is still in the round as well. Peeled the bark just after cutting it and sealed the ends with glue right away and brought it home where it has sat on the top of my stave pile since. Took a look at it today and
like Pearlies no checks anywhere. Not sure when I'll start on it, may be awhile.
