Osage longbow - eastern woodland style - 54# @ 29"
« on: July 15, 2015, 05:25:45 pm »
Osage longbow. 68" nock to nock. 54# at 29" draw
Mammoth Ivory striekplate inlay. Pin nocks.
Bends through the handle. Handle wrapped with braintan buckskin dyed with walnut hulls.
This bow was made as an osage version of a eastern woodland style bow. It turned out to be quite pleasure to shoot. Not the fastest bow, but not slow by any means. It is very, very forgiving to shoot. Draws very smooth and hits right where you look.
It had some drying checks at the ends that fortunately fell in the center of the pin nocks. Tips of pin nocks wrapped with sinew. Recesses were carved in the wood prior to wrapping the sinew to leave the sinew flush with the surface.
Finished with a good thorough burnishing then beeswaxed.
Thanks for looking

This is after burnishing only, no finish yet.

"The bow is the old first lyre,
the mono chord, the initial rune of fine art
The humanities grew out from archery as a flower from a seed
No sooner did the soft, sweet note of the bow-string charm the ear of genius than music was born, and from music came poetry and painting and..." Maurice Thompso

Very cool, nice bit of character.
Any medieval Englishman would know what to do with it too :)
It would be be interesting to have seen a NA and a medieval English peasant talking about bows (ignoring the language problems of course)

Sharp bow, I like the contrast between the character upper and straight bottom limb, plus those stats would fit me to a T.

Vey cool, Carson.  8)  Will you post a pic of the belly side of one or the hoop-d-dos. I'm working on an osage bow with a similar hoop-d-do and I want to see how you worked them on the belly.
