In this picture you can see(I hope) where the vane base crosses from one side of the quill to the other. Should I avoid using that section? I'm thinking that when pulled straight it might affect the shape of the fletch.

Remove as much of the quill as you can before grinding the final fletching.
Have you ever tried stripping the feather from the quill?

I've tried it a few times and each time I ruined three feathers, started to swear and went back to grinding. I think I managed to properly strip two feathers out of about a dozen. Just can't seem to figure it out.

Have you rehydrated the feathers first before stripping. Place them in a plastic bag with a damp cloth for a few hours first. They should strip easily and completely after that.

It occurred to me after I posted that I have a few culls in this batch of feathers. I will practice with them
I'll re hydrate them first.
