Rot in hickory wood?
« on: March 17, 2015, 12:01:26 pm »
Greetings folks. I've been working on a piece of hickory over the past few weeks (I go slow), and I've noticed some discoloration in the wood near both tips. It had the bark on it when I received it and the ends were well sealed, and according to the seller (I bought it on eBay) it had been seasoning for 2+ years. I've posted a photograph below. The discoloration is subtle, but noticeable, and I worry that it's some sort of rot or fungus that will compromise the integrity of the wood. Anyone have experience with this? Am I just being paranoid? The wood feels hard and strong to me...

Eric, I've noticed that when hickory is bad it has a grainy, crumbly feel to the surface and when it is sound it is hard and slick.
Is the discoloration only at the tip or is it throughout? If only at the tip, non working area, it should be OK.

Hi Pat, the discoloration is only at the tips of the stave. Most of the stave is hickory's normal off-white color. The surface is still plenty hard and slick.

Hickory can have different color grains, looks like you dropped from one grain down to the next.
