Plastic vice jaws

Anyone ever make plastic vice jaws? Out of old cutting boards or such. How did they work out. I could make removable jaws but my vice just opens enough to get a 2x4 in and if I was removing jaws all the time it's just something to clutter up my bench or loose just when I want them.

I just wrap my bows/staves with scraps of leather or even that spongy tool box liner before I put them in a vise if a don't want them all marred up.

That's what I do now, more or less, but since my vice is used about 99% for bows I thought there might be a more permanent solution. I'm thinking the plastic might be a bit hard.

If your vice has removable pads you could replace them with wooden ones like these.  I would add a piece of leather to them.

That's what I was going to do but in plastic. I like the leather layer idea. I could make them out of Ocean Spray, that's nice and hard. Thanks OO.

I'd use s soft wood, most bow woods will be harder than. Imo

That makes sense but I was concerned with the jaws splitting if they were too soft. I suppose the leather would hold it together. Maybe I'll use yew instead. Or plywood.

I made mine out of poplar with a layer of leather.  They have held up for 3 years so far.  My vice opens pretty far so I made them to just pop in place with rare earth magnets.

I glue leather to mine also. I have one that has a set of plastic jaws that slip over the steel ,they came from Lowes I think.

Oh yeah! The magnets! I'd seen that before(probably you) and forgotten. I can't think of more than one thing at a time. What was I saying? Yeah, magnets. I'll go to the hobby shop today, I've seen some there.

I use hard rubber vice jaws that are magnetic.  No removing hardward all the time.  Quick change.  I bought mine at LOWES.

I made some just like Double O's. They work slick. I used 1/4" birch plywood and drilled them for three magnets but only glued in two. I'll put in the third if necessary. Those super magnets are impressive! They store right on the side of the vice--I shouldn't lose them.

You can get about 100 of those magnets from the big auction site for the cost of a 10 pack  in the store

Yeah, I paid through the nose for these at the hobby shop but it's a one time thing and I like to support the hobby shop. When I need something NOW it's nice to have a source. They really work well! I think two magnets per jaw will work.
