Lookin' for ideas

This is the handle section of an Ocean Spray stave. Unless you kerf the handle it usually splits anyway so after it dries and shrinks you end up with a "V" shaped kerf about 1/2" wide at the top and 1/8" or so at the bottom. I'm looking for ways to fill this kerf. The quick and dirty way is to fill it with an epoxy/sawdust mix. Another way would be to flatten the inside of the V with a chisel and then skillfully cut a piece to fit. The "skillful" part may be out of my reach. Any other ideas that I may have missed or some way to improve my chances with the skillful part.

Run it in your table saw and make a perfect v cut the full it with other wood

Would I build some kind of jig to hold the stave? You've got me thinking.

If u could build a sled for it . I'd take two pieces of 2x4 and leave a gap big enough for the handle, and screw something on the side to hold em. Shim the stave till it's straight compared to the saw blade. Use the board on the side holding the two 2x4s and set your fence so it runs right where ya want it. Then cut the v from one side. Flip it and do the ither. If that makes sense

I flattened the handle and glued a piece of plywood 2" wide and 6" long to it with 5 min epoxy. Then I ran that through the saw using the edge of the plywood against the fence. The cut came out a bit wide, I still haven't figured out why, but it's good. Left the saw the same angle and ran a piece of Ipe through it sneaking the fence over a bit for each cut. Glued it together with West Systems epoxy and Cabosil(an epoxy thickener). It's now in the hot box and we'll see how it looks tomorrow.
