Cedar Question

I've been working on a cedar stave for a sinew back recurve I want to do this winter.  Draw knife worked like cutting butter when removing the sapwood, but the scraper was a different story.  I thought my scraper was good and sharp but I couldn't get a curl off to save my life, it just seamed to tear and crumble the wood off.  not what I expected.  Has anyone had this experience?  do you use a scraper to tiller?

Same problem with ERC and scrapers that I had.  What works for me in lieu of scrapers is an 80 grit belt sander belt with a 1x2 wedged in it.  Sort of like a fine cut rasp.  Works good for me anyway.  Josh

ERC and Yew are the only two woods that I can use a spoke shave on with good results. A fine rasp(Nicholson #49)also worked well but not a scraper.

The juniper bow I made hated the scraper. +1 on the 80 grit and block

Ive had the same experiance as Doc & Pat.. I got so flustered that i made a boat oar instead of a bow, lol...alot less critical  ... I found the same as Pat, it likes a spoke shave... Brian

I've always used a scraper with juniper and haven't had any problems

Try using a "dull" scraper Bill.

The ERC bow I made for the trade worked like butter with my scraper.  It would peel curls off that would turn to powder they were so thin.  How much pressure are you using with your scraper?  When I would use mine I would use very light pressure and it would still just peel it off like crazy and I had a very good burr on it.  I almost forgot, I also used a very low angle with my scraper.

Hey Bill...I blanked out a erc for a sinewed recurve n bent almost 90° statics in it a month ago...its almost ready to be sinewed,but I hate sinewing...since your getting your pot out ya wanna do mine to for me....pleeeeease

I use a rasp and then hold my Draw knife at a 90dg angle and use the backside like a scraper. I get some curls, then.
