Short bow reflex question

For a bow in the 40" range, what is a good amount of reflex to aim for?
I'm making a new caul for bend through the handle bows. I drew it out but
I'm thinking it might be a bit much. It's 48" long, and is 3" deep at the tips.
Too much?

I don't quite understand your description it sounds like you have a 48" long bow with a 40 pound draw weight and three inches of reflex in the handle (is this a gull wing bow?).but we would still need more information design draw and length are very important. The bow certainly doesn't need any reflex. At that length though you may want to reflex/recurve the tips to avoid any stacking (depending on draw length)

sorry if i wasnt clear. i'm talking about a 48"long caul that I'm making for short bows.
I drew it up and was just checking to see if its a bit steep.
If i put a 48" bow on it, I would be heating in 3" of reflex in a limb. My other caul us 68" and 4" of reflex.
I should just take a picture maybe...

That would be fine. After all you don't have to clamp a stave into the full 3 inches.
Remember that as wood thins it can bend further so try to have no reflex at the handle, a little mid limb and the rest out towards the tip. If you do this you'll find it easier to keep some reflex out to full draw.
