Nock buildup
« on: May 13, 2014, 11:10:07 pm »
OK, I'm about to finish the tiller on a nice Oregon Ash from Carson @ Echo.  I'd like to do a contrasting build up on the nocks with a nice piece of Koa, or Cherry.

Never done one before, so can y'all give me a little advice? Read tutorial!

Thanks in advance.

Check out this build along that Gordon did. It is full of invaluable info and is really well done. He shows how to put on tip overlays. I think he says to use epoxy for the glue but I would recommend a gel superglue, that's what Gordon uses now as well. Look forward to seeing your bow.

Make all glue surfaces smooth and well mated. pre-shape the limb end of the overlay(not tip end) so it fades to nothing on the limb. This makes it easy to get a smooth transition for looks and ease of stringing.  I use either gel super glue or TBIII for overlays and wrap with rubber bands.

Ok, I've decided on either ERC or Ebony.  I know that Ebony is very oily, will TBIII work OK on either one, or should I use epoxy?

ERC is probably too soft for an effective tip overlay.    Sand the ebony and glue it down. The glue should stick to the "new" sanded wood.

never had a problem with ebony. It makes a nice overlay. I've fallen for horn though. It's tough to beat.
