Broke my streak :(

Well after 2...3? years at this and a dozen bows I finally broke one.
It was my second, a hickory static. Just reworked the handle, slimmed the tips, and put a good finish on it last week. Became my favorite shooter then... Bang!












I knew it was working too hard near the ends. Does it look like a tension or compression break?

I hear ya about breaking 'em.          I would say a Tension break.  But what do I know.........

I'd say tension too but that is odd for hickory.

I was thinking the same thing. The grain was good and I can't find anything in the wood so I assume it was just overworked.

I agree Pat,  unless some fretting went unnoticed.  I had a hickory fret... and I shot it until it collapse with a tension break.

Don't sweat it. I had a bow explode in my hand yesterday and I've made over a hundred. It happens...

What were the dimensions and draw weight?

40# @ 27"
66" ntn
9.5" handle
9" static tips 7/16" wide
1.5" wide limb with a pyramid taper

It performed very well but if I did it again I would have at least 2" wide limbs and get it working closer to the fades

This was the tiller back in 2012, it looks to me to be bending too much at the ends, and there's not much meat there. It was a board but there was absolutely no runout at that point, the other limb that didn't break had a SLIGHT wave in the grain, nothing that would break in my inexperienced opinion.

I didn't see any frets and I had just refinished it... I forgot to mention I heat treated the belly slightly which may have overpowered the back. I've never heard that happen before
