When hunting with a bow, a second defense weapon and pipe could be handy. The blade does not have to be sharp, which could be hazardous to cutting the bow string. A dull blade swung hard will not be a pleasant result. The "Peace Pipe" was said to be smoked with a friend or the other side to kill the person if it was decided they were not your friend. It represents "Love and War".

Pat, were you thinking of Briar, and not Meerschaum? That is a white stone, that is carved into faces, and such, on the bowls.
