Too much crack in osage?
« on: September 03, 2013, 12:41:43 pm »
This is a hair line crack in the belly of this stave. It was given to me already well seasoned. As I was roughing it out I noticed a couple of these cracks about mid limb.  Don't know if I can just run some superglue in it and be ok or not? What do you think? Or is it one of the things where you just try it and see????

Also these cracks don't go through to the back of the stave. I took the stave down to about 1/4" from it's needed thickness and the cracks still are there.  They did reduce in size and width as I got to this point.

Should be fine as long as the limbs come straight back when you draw it , if they twist then it could split even worse I'd fill it with glue and not worry about it
I like osage

Thanks for the reassurance. I have some really thin superglue that will flow nicely into those small areas.

Super glue it and go for it! Those types of checks in the belly are usually not a problem.

I would be a bit concerned about the check running down the far right side of the limb, looks like the rings might be seperating. If so I would wrap that with sinew.

I think that is a pencil line on the side of the limb.

As for the belly check; superglue it and forget it.

I have made osage bows with the same type of  cracks. Superglue it . No problem at all. :-)
