Failures and Progress from the Gratz Pit wk of 7-19
« on: July 19, 2013, 08:17:37 pm »
Got to spend some time in the pit this week. Worked real hard on my percussion technique. Learned a lot from my buddy @ Glenn Black Lab. How to get out corkscrews and so on. Hold the rock parallel to the ground when doing long flakes. Anyway, I ended up breaking several nice pieces. Couple of pics of that.

Then my GBL buddy gave me a few pcs on Texas chert and said if I could get something out of them I'd be doing pretty good. I made the one on the right lastnight and the other this morning. Really trying to work on my shaping skills and trying to get the shoulders off early to get a triangular point. I'm feeling pretty good about the last two, small, but started small too.

Thanks for lookin and double thanks for replyin, dpgratz

From all the chips it looks like you're getting through a ton of rock :D. Like those points man! Especially like that tough Texas rock- really nice heated. Keep hanging out over on campus and there gonna have to give faculty status and a parking pass  ::).

Hey, I was over in your area last weekend knapping for the Heritage Days gathering at Paynetown. You'll have to join me next year ;).

Nice work!

Derick your points are looking good! Now on the preforms I tend to snap them unless I keep the ends thin first. Always thin the ends then middle then ends

I think you did a heck of a job on them points. The only thing missing is the shafts.

Killer looking points there! All that other is just learning curve - gotta have it unfortunately.
