Good paste wax to go over a matte tung oil finish?
« on: July 16, 2013, 06:09:26 pm »
Anybody recommend a paste wax to put over a matte tung oil finish? My bows have just seemed a bit dull lately, been wondering about finding a paste wax product to put a good shine over my bows, something to get em looking sharp, ya know? :) I guess I could just start using a gloss finish like tru oil or something. I was thinking of grabbing up something from woodcraft tonight. Also, now that I think of it, some guy told me you can pick up the little bottles of tru oil from dicks sporting goods, anybody know if this is true?

Don't normally use paste wax, but have used Johnson Paste wax, turned out ok.

Does the wax leave a nice finish yall? Is it glossy like a normal beeswax finish? Or will it be kinda matte?

How many coats of tung oil do you apply? I apply 4 at least, sometimes 5. You have to let each coat dry for 24 hours before applying the next coat. I have used Johnson's paste wax but not very often. After 4 coats, most of my bows take on a really nice satin glisten finish.

I do about two or 3, but it takes about 2 weeks between each coat at the least because I use the straight stuff from woodcraft, the pure un cut tung oil. It takes forever to cure. I don't like normal tung oil finishes from lowes because I hate smelling the solvents,  ;D. Especially naptha.

I put a 50/50 beeswax/mineral oil paste over my Tung oil finishes. Cuts the shine down and adds another layer of water proofing and gives a warm feeling rubbed in finish.

I use one coat of shellac, 4-6 coats of Tung oil  and then 3-4 coats of Johnsons paste wax. Its an absolute gorgeous finish and I cant take a lick of credit for it. Try the Johnsons paste wax. Its a big yellow can. You wont be disappointed.
