Fathers Day knife
« on: July 06, 2013, 04:13:51 pm »
I made this knife for my Dad.  It was a late Fathers Day present.  I bought the blank from somebody at the Classic, I can't remember his name.  I started to shine the blade up but I got it to this point and really liked how it looked so I left it.  Jon helped me with the scales and showed me some tips for putting it all together.  Thanks for the help Jon.  I appreciate you taking the time to show me a few tips.  I know you guys are busy down there.

I'm still not happy with my leather work.  This was my second try at a belt sheath for it.

I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

knife look's nice, I make a paper template for most sheaths and just keep cutting till I get what I like

Thanks Bubby.  That's what I did with this one.  I struggle with keeping things even and making the stitching look uniform.

I think it was Allen Corn that was selling the blanks, Clintster.  I haven't done anything with mine, yet.  I've picked it up about once every two days, lately.  Likely, I'll get at it soon.

I like how yours turned out.  What did you use for pins?

It looks really nice.  Well done!

Yes, the guy who makes the blanks is Allen Corn, a Twin Oaks member.  He heat treats em and they are really nice.  Spoke with him today and he's got a bunch made up.

clint on the sheaths I like to make them out of one pc of leather if I can, as for the stitching I use a 4 prong punch it really helps get straight stitching, punch the first 4 holes then put the first prong in the last hole

I've been wanting to get one of those prong punches.  I use a rotary one with the different sized holes.  Thanks Bubby.

You did a heck of a job on the knife Clint. Real nice work. Love the grain on the handle!!  I usually use a rawhide or wood linner in my sheaths to keep my sharp @$$ knives from cutting through the lacing.  Moonshine Leather in Nashville, IN has those lace punches. You drive over some day and maybe we could get together with Tracy and ..???..forgot his name right now.  :-[ I can even stop by there and get a pic of what they have if you'd rather.  Great work Buddy as usual!! dpg

Sorry, I'm not ready for any knife trading yet.  That was the only blank I bought.  I'm still trying to learn how to make my own blades.  There are some very talented knife makers on here that might be willing to trade.
