here is the link to a new video I did on hand drilling for fire. It gives a little bit of a "look in" as to how I utilize friction fire several times a week. Was kinda fun Abo fire video to shoot before cooking some chert

Great video!  You made it look easy!  It was great to learn you don't have to rush once you get a coal going.  The few times I've done a friction fire, I've gone as fast as I could to get it into a flame.  I like the idea of slowing down and enjoying it.  Thanks!

thanks.  yeah I learned after a while that if you rush you actually have a greater chance of losing it. give it time and let it grow all on it's own and the coal just gets bigger and hotter

nice little video!
I guess i do tend to rush puffing on it soon after dropping the coal into the nest. instead of just squeezing the nest gently into the coal
and allow the coal to do its own work... well done. i use a straight dry branch of box elder for a spindle, as its what grows right here in NE Ok..
yucca is sure nice but I don't wanna get dependent on foreign materials! :)
when i'm working on things my ancestors worked, singing the songs my ancestors sang, dancing the same dances, speaking the same language, only then  I feel connected to the land, THIS land, where my ancestors walked for thousands of years...

Thanks Richard.  yeah Letting the coal grow only helps!  I like yucca a lot and it grows in the sand hills around here. But I like to use a lot of other local plants as well, dogfennel, elderberry, caesarweed  and saltbush.  seems that once you know what to look for in a spindle you can find them about anywhere you go even if it is an unknown species to you
