Weather it's new or old you thought of it so congrats.  Similar to what I use to mark my centerline. I like it.

Sometimes the simple basic tools one makes is just as usefull as a Lee Valley tool.

I first mark several dots along the side of the stave, all measured the same thickness from the back with a ruler, then i run a carpenters line with my fingers, using the dots as guides to make sure i'm staying uniform all the way down.  Doesn't take much longer, but your method would definitely cut that extra step out.  May steal it

I've always just eyeballed it and tapered it with my fingers.... always seems to come out right :/

That works good Pearly. Kind of like the old sign painter trick for doin layout lines on a sign board with a yardstick and pencil. Even used a pin striping brush with a yardstick run along the edge like that. Here's my crude marking guage I threw together in a few minutes. Only takes one hand holdin the bow and the other the guage. Wedge on one side of the pencil is 1/2", wedge on the other side gives me 5/8". Round dowel follows all the humps and bums great.
