Question,,  Found a govt issue canteen floating in the river yesterday, half full of clear water.(Army rangers train down there daily) I washed it out with bleach water but it still has a funky smell to it,any suggestions on how to get the smell out?

If the vinegar doesn't work try baking soda...but be sure there is no more vinegar in it.  ;D

if neither of those work, try hydrogen peroxide, full strength for a couple hours or even overnight.

If that doesn't work, you're SOL

Having drank many gallons of water from those canteens,I will tell you, the plastic itself has a certain offensive odor when you open them. I dont know why, or what, but there is an odor in all of them you will never get rid of. I have served both Air Force    ( short time ) and Navy, both with the green plastic canteens, and If its the odor I just realized that you are talking about, then it is permanent, and you will never get rid of it. They come that way. Kind of a musky... warm smell? The best cure for that is not to inhale while taking a sip. Thats how I solved the problem with all of my canteens.

Yeah, figured after I put some thought to it... Man, that smell is a bad one. Wish I had known baking soda would work back then.... Hell, you could get rich and famous just off making a cleaning solution that will eliminate that odor... lots of military would buy it just cause the smell is bad...
