Aniline Dye
« on: February 20, 2013, 08:18:33 pm »
Hey Guys,

I am about to put a finish on my first osage flat bow and wanted to dye it with aniline dye.  What do you guys/gals use to seal the bow after applying dye?  I was thinking of using true oil and wondered if that would work well.  Thanks for any input.

Good question Mark,
I will be watching as I am going to do a steel wool, coffee, vinager dye and I wonder if just a few coats of spar varnish will do the trick. I would guess it would as well as aniline. I haven't used aniline though.

I've done it a few times. I've used poly and spar urathane over dye with no problems at all.

I've used feibings leather dye on osage and white woods with tru oil with good results, just make sure the dye has had plenty of time to dry before top coating,
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.

Be careful with alcohol based dyes and shellac. It can re-activate the dye and cause runs. Don't ask me how I know! ::)
