Future Bows, another osage haul
« on: February 18, 2013, 06:34:10 pm »
I noticed on one of the farms I hunt an osage that the wind had blown over...
It's quite a bit bigger than the pic makes it look.

I thought, well, it has a decent straight trunk and no apparrent twist according to the bark.  So I cut it:

Looks like decent growth rings and a good early/late ratio.

Boy was it tough to split!  It was about 16" in diameter at the base.  I split it just small enogh to be able to lift in the truck.  The length is about 7 feet.

Looks like 3 staves in this chunk...

I just couldn't stand the thought of it getting cut up for firewood!

I would be going to bed with sore muscles and a smile on my face.

Ha, well, I always go to bed with a smile..  I am a bit sore.. I've never seen wedges bounce out so much!  I found if I kerf the corner with the chainsaw, I could drive the wedge, then start one in the central end of it, otherwise it was impossible for me on this big log.

I split some belly splits today.. This log appears to be a little snakey!  no wonder it was hard to split!

Nice Haul :)
Seal the ends.
Seal the backs of the belly splits and the bellys of the back splits.
