We had a bad windstorm about a week ago that knocked over a large cedar. I was thinking about making a mantle with it and/or split into staves for bows. What would you guys do with it?

That is a good idea also. I guess I am wondering if cedar is a good enough bow wood to split into staves or if i shouldnt "waste" it like that and make somethn nice like mantle, entertainment center etc?

Its pretty wood for sure. No, its not good bow wood. Sure a few make it out of each hundred built.

Its a real good wood for outdoor furniture like Adirondack chairs and the like. Light weight and decay resistant.

firs thing id do is peel that bark, get at the inner bark and squirrel away for a project down the road.
inner bark can be woven to make lots of things, including a nice quiver.
and ya still have all that wood to be made into something special
