55" Eastern Woodland Scalloped Bow

Simple little bow of black walnut, mostly sapwood. Had this narrow piece of a black walnut stave around the shop a few years and a little
spare time on my hands this week. The sap wood back just under the bark had pretty grain and texture so I wanted to make something out of it. Not enough wood in it to make a hunting weight bow. Induced 3" of reflex on the caul and it ended up with 1.25" when done.
Finished at 33# @24" /  55" ntn / edges painted red on flat side and dyed brown on scalloped side / parafin wax heated in and then bees
wax finish buffed on top. Not sure on tiller, I think I may be seeing a slight hingey area bottom limb to work out.

Man you been crankin' 'em out Greg.  From the pic I would say your right about the bottom limb.

Yeah Slim I think I'll end up doing a little work on the bottom limb. The wax only finish comes in handy when you go to scrape more off the bow, it's a pain if it has been varnished.

I like that style of bow Greg. A few scrapes on the bottom limb and you got it whipped.

Been there.  Looks like it will be sweet when finished.  I've got my marathon bow I'm tryin' to finish.  24 miles behind me, and the last 2 are pure hell.  I can see the finish line, both of 'em.

Jon, should I scrape above hinge area, below or both? I often end up making a hinge area worse somehow. What would you do?

I wpould give it a few above the hinge and get it bending more by the handle. It looks good though.

Yeah I second that Greg. Work the handle fade area and then see what it looks like.

gives me hope that maybe there are some bows in the small diameter(6-8") walnut logs i got curing right now.
heartwood in them is rather slim.

Great looking bow. I realy like those those scalloped bows you seem to crank out with ease. I see the spot on the lower limb your talking about but the camera angle makes it look way thicker than the top limb so i cant decide if its truly a hinge or just an optical illusion.

Thanks Sadie. Black walnut sapwood is fine in my opinion, I've made 7 bows of black walnut with thick sapwood and only a thin layer
of heartwood if any at all on the belly. Sounds like some nice staves you got there.

Thanks turtle, this one was easy because the stave split was so small and narrow there wasn't much wood to remove, plus walnut is really easy to work.
