Question about thin wood backings

Does a thin,1/8", wood backing need to be straight grained and riff cut like a board, or can you use flat sawn ring violated backing? Can a thin wood backing protect a flat sawn

I've used flat sawn ring violated hickory backing twice with no issues...I think it depends on what species your using as a backing.

And to answer your second question...yes. because it is now protected with the backing strip.

I agree. I've made quite a few hickory backed bows with violated hickory backings. I would suggest using the best backing material you can get, though.
 1/8" or even slightly less is plenty thick enough for a hickory backing.

Hickory is much stronger than maple, both work. The core needs to be considered when chosing a backing.

hickory, maple white oak are all real good backers, but like pearlie said you have to consider the core, bub

I prefer to match the back with the belly. If my belly is stron gin compression I like a back strong in tension. If I use a belly a bit weaker in compression I use a back a bit weak in tension. Think harmony between them.

These are opinions, not rules.

Oak belly = maple back
osage/ipe belly = hickory back

There are tons of good possibilities.....that's like asking how many different number combinations can you make with the numbers 123456?

Like pearl said match em up...and do some research cus this has been asked and answered several times.
