Ring violation near nock? Should I chase a ring?
« on: January 02, 2013, 05:49:55 pm »
Well I violated the ring on this bow when I was sanding the tip even to glue on the overlays. The violation is about 1" under where the nock will be. Should I go ahead and chase a ring? The bow will be about 60" and has a non-working handle (for now anyway). Here are some pictures:

"The way of heaven is like the bending of a bow-
the upper part is pressed down,
the lower part is raised up,
the part that has too much is reduced,
the part that has too little is increased."

i would think it depends on the wood, also, if your going to have a high weight. I would think you could get away with it if you extend the tip overlays past that, maybe 6 inches for decoration and add a bit of extra reflex in the tips, you will still be able to have small nocks and it will just add some beauty to it.

and by six inches i mean just get it to cover the ring violation by about an inch, also if you are having doubts i would suggest you chase it with a sander or something because it seems like that ring is thin, maybe 10-15 mins a the very max?

I probably would even tho it is in a non bending area and doubt it would matter. :) :) Just can't stand for one to get the best of me. ;) :)

IMO it doesn't matter, there is V little leverage there. Say you are pulling 48#, at 1" from the tip that's just 4 foot pounds of torque which isn't much. Coside some ofthe pencil tips you see on here. If in doubt, you can always leave it a tad thicker for the last inch or so.
