Wapiti - Ash starter bow
« on: October 14, 2007, 11:49:37 pm »
Found a tree in my VM stand that looked like an ASH (ash-type leaves anyway) - it was tall and straight I had to try.  Worth doing?  The wood smells fantastic as I was scraping the bark.

Questions:

Pic1/2 : Too snakey for a new guy?

Pic3 : What to do about a knot like this?

Pic4 : Do these knots look like bad new???

Pic5 : Lotsa knots  ... bad?

I'm loving the look of this stave - but...    and still trying to go at it with expectations that its going to break - just to keep the sanity.  But, I'm loving this one.....

It will definitely be a challenge, but also a good learning process. It should hold If you keep it low weighted enough. like 30-40# or so..

That's a pretty hairy looking chunk of wood :)
