   I watched somebody wrap one in modeling clay.he made a nice flute,but it wasn't as good as the one Claude Van Order did with percussion,a good nipple set up and center ridge uniformity.

I cant see the dirt idea working because i dont think it would give it enough support and the cay probly wont eather and if it did it would also but presher on the face were th fluted flack is to be removed there for hindering the potential flack.
 i always just hold erm real tight in my hand and say make it or brake it, yell "oogabooga" and whack it.. and it works 90% of the time for me.

The clay works,, I seen a friend of mine do it,, the dirt would also but in the dirt case you would need a punch.
