Anybody have a dry Osage sapling?
« on: October 29, 2012, 08:10:49 pm »
I'd like to try an osage sapling, sucker or branch.
I have no interest is chasing a ring and like the contrast between sapwood/heart wood.

I have all sorts of stuff for trade.

I have some but they aren't dry.  I cut them in july or august.  The only thing I did to them is seal the ends.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Anything in particular you want in trade?
I'm not afraid of drying anything.
Stuff doesn't hold onto moisture round here,

What size diameter and length are you looking for?  I can send pics tomorrow.  Let me make sure I have something that will work for you and then we will figure out a trade.

Something like 2"+ diameter and 60"-66".
Ive never worked osage so... I would defer to your experience.

I like to shoot between 60-70lbs at 28"... And am pretty open to design but Ive been wanting to try a 5 curve.
Im okay with backing it too, rawhide, sinew or even flax.

Perhaps we should discuss via PM.

Thanks

I didn't have anything that would work.  Is there anybody else that can help him out?

I have a sucker that I cut last winter in the shed somewhere.  At the small end it shows only abut 1/2" of heartwood thickness though.  It has several  little pin knots where little branches were.  I will take a pic of it tomorrow so I have something to show you.  It might be just what you need, since it don't take much osage to make a bow.  I haven't got to it yet, since I was planning on chasing a ring and those little knots were gonna take more time than I have right now!    I can't remember just offhand how long it is, maybe around 68" and is about 2 1/2" diameter at the fat end and well over an inch at the skinny end.

Sounds like it would work.
Even if it is a bit shorter or thinner.
