My first bone point
« on: September 24, 2012, 07:18:44 pm »
I didn't try anything fancy for my first go at it, but I did flute it. (I think that's what I did anyway, correct me if I'm wrong.) There are no barbs or serrations because both are illegal to hunt with here, and I make all my stuff intending to use it in the field. Well here it is:

I may have to haft the next one deeper into the shaft of the arrow, but maybe not. We'll see after a good shooting session. I used a dremel tool for just about the whole thing, including a light polish at the end. I haven't put a real good edge on yet because I can't seem to find my file.

Anyway, your comments and suggestions are welcome as always. I'm always looking for ways to improve.

I too will be getting to some bone points in the near future.

Are ya gonna soak the hafting in some glue or some sort?
It would make it loads more reliable.

Well that should slip right through! Not knowing a bunch about bone points myself, I wonder if those who used them gained or lost anything by serrating them.

Yeah I soaked it in super glue. Not primitive, but I've always been more about handmade than actually primitive.

That is cow bone.

Bad news though. The third shot I took snapped the tip off, but it did hit something pretty hard. The head is large enough that I can refinish it and still be within the legal size though, so its no biggie, and I've got blanks for another few points all cut out.
