Here's the way my Dad did it.

Take the lid off the trash can after pouring bacon grease in it. Lean a 2x 6 at an angle against the trash can. When he crawls up and jumps in to get to the grease, slam the lid on and set it out front and wait for Garbage day.  ::)

Jack Russel Terrier.  Better still, two Jack Russel Terriers.
There is no problem that cannot be solved with logic.  Or a bigger hammer.

I used chili for bait. I caught the skunk the first night.

A skunk with chili farts?  I see no good coming from this. 
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.
