Half Eye's red oak bow 50" 50# @ 25" finished pics added
« on: September 14, 2012, 05:55:09 pm »
Just got done with a honey-do (livingroom floor) and milled out 130 feet of 3" red oak mop-boards. Had some left over so I thought I try to get my own opinion on the stuff since I never built a bow from it.

Our red oak up here is not very red, but that's what it is, so threw in some grain closeup pics. The bow is a self bow 50" ntn, weighs 50# @ 25", (I believe it will finish out at 50# @ 26) it has 1/2" wide tips with pin knocks and 1-3/16" wide at the grip.....needs to be sanded out and finished but seems to shoot real nice at 15/20 yards.......thinkin about some workin recurves, but we'll see.

So I guess I got nothin bad to say about the red oak, at least the boards I cut and milled. Enjoy the pics.....but everybody probably allready knows about red oak.

Ain't there any wood you can't make a bow out of, Rich?? Nice job and your usual great bend. Is she quick??

Thank you for the kind words, fellas. This whole thing was just an experiment so I could tell for myself if I liked the wood. It's real good so far......the biggest difference I did notice is the red seems to make a lighter (dry weight) than the white did. I dont know how ya'll do the backs and belly but this one I did low crown back (allmost like a shallow trap) and the belly got a more shallow crown but still crowned. Did not have any issues with splintering or excessive set either.

Dell, I seen your bows, sir.....mine do not have anything on them, your elb's are outstanding

Kenny, will let ya know tomorrow, gonna shoot the snot out of it

sa, ya I would/will for sure. My neck of the woods has so many good bow woods it will not be my main wood, but I'd use it for sure.

Thanks slimbob, bubby: aint none of my bows "perfect" but I'm tryin hard to learn to make all of the future bows with a "good" circle tiller.

Wow!  I am impressed Rich.  Leave it to you get that kind of weight/draw length out of red oak.  Amazing.

Perfect tiller on that bow Rich, I know it when I see it, now if I could just learn how to make it happen myself.

Need to call you, if you don't mind, have some questions and requests.
Have an idea about a bow...I want to call the scorpion( Arizona you know)...Basically a Penobscot, but with 3 layers not two.
My next NIGHTMARE :-\. HAHA.
Need input!

Thanks my friend...may trade if you wish...(I'll come up with something).
