salted snake skin??
« on: August 26, 2012, 04:20:36 pm »
One of my buddies called me up the other day saying that he had killed some snakes and had skinned and salted them and wondered if I waned them for bow projects. I have always just tacked the skins out on a board after a light scraping, then rehydrate right before putting on a bow. Is there anything I should be aware of with salted skins? I'm not sure if he scraped them clean out not. I was thinking I should rehydrate them, scrape them and tack them out to dry a second time, good idea or no?

Duck, all you have to do is get the salt off the skin. It may take a few rinses in fresh water to do so. While you are at it go ahead and wash the skin in Dawn dish soap to remove any fat that might be on the skin. After this you can glue it right down to the bow or tack it back out to dry and store it for later use.
