Finish for Ipe ?
« on: September 13, 2007, 03:47:36 am »
I need to put a finish on a boo backed Ipe. The Ipe is oily and from reading it seems I need deft. My local hardware nor Walmart seems to have it. Is Deft the full name of it?

Thanks, Ron

Deft is a product name like minwax. They make regular polyurethane or a spar varnish.
If your using poly I would use spar varnish as it is weather proof and UV light proof. Regular poly degrades from UV rays.

I sprayed it with deft wood finish. 4 coats earlier. My understanding is I can put tru oil over it. we'll find out. I have read tru oil under it doesn't work so well.

why not just use the tru-oil?  One of my ipe bows has only tru-oil as do most of my rifle and shotgun stocks. Some of them have cabinet makers wax over that, and my other ipe bow is finished only with cabinet makers wax.

I've read several post where people can't get tru-oil to dry on bare Ipe

Ron,
Danish Oil works well on Ipe. I have found it quite weather resistant when a good number of layers are used. it brings the colour and grain out in the wood nice as well.
