Rich is as good a nut as they come.

Hate to jump on someone else's thread........ But I was wondering what length of bow would a person make for a kid of that size. I would like to make one for my friends daughter, and she is about that size. would red oak be suitable for say a 20-25 pound bow at about 48 inches long?

Good on you Rich for sending this kid a bow. I've always been impressed with the advice and generousity of people on this forum.

I've made a bunch of 48 inch red oak bows with 1/4 inch slats from Lowes. You have to search thru them to find one with straight grain.
Simple pyramid shape about 1 1/4 inches at fade to 3/8 at tips.glue on a handle using laminations
7 year old do well with about 15 pounds at 24 inches.

I've moved up as the grand kids have grown to bamboo backed Ipe and hickory.

Here is a molle style bow I built using a 1/4 in. red oak slat from Lowe's like Macbow mentioned above.

The "skins" are blown up photos of snake skins printed on paper and glued as a paper back to the bow.

Thanks Macbow, and Lesken, I will certainly try the quarter inch slats.  I really like the idea of the paper snake skins. They look great, and my friends daughter will love it.
