hawks n hatchets

enjoying the threads on old hatchets.
have a great old hatchet found at a yard sale for $2. a boy scout marked plumb.

today i decided to rehandle a hawk with a chunk of osage
left over from splitting out staves that ended up in the firewood pile

used that old plumb hatchet to rough out the handle,
then rasps, a scraper, sandpaper and bear grease to finish it up
just like making a bow with no rings to chase...

Wow! Really nice work!  I think you got a real deal on that hatchet, they are collectable.  I'm not an expert at all, but I've seen them go on online auctions for $30-50.

its not old, i picked it up at a primitive skills meet a cupla yrs ago
the handle was too short for my liking but i couldnt turn down the price
just hadnt gotten around to making a new handle for it till today.

the plumb hatchet is a sweet one and i use it lots so think ill just hold onto it :)

Awesome job on the hawk! I am looking for a hawk head to put on top of a walking stick, just to see how i like it , but havn't found one that suits me yet.

You can't beat those plumb hatchets :)

I talked with a guy today who works at a landfill, and he said he would pick up all the axe and hammer heads he came across for me. Hopefully I may have a few more to refinish soon  ;D
