question on pins
« on: April 29, 2012, 09:35:57 am »
Been debarking my elm, a combination of peeling and light drawknifing cuz it's playing hard to get.  Some of the staves are very clean, but some have the tiniest of pin knots on the back in several places.  Some of them i managed to peel the cambium off successfully (have kind of a thorny look/feel to them), but some of the pins i accidentally went over with the knife (knocked off the "thorn").  Are these gonna be trouble?   The outer layer of wood that these are on is quite thick, about 3/16".

In this photo, they are at the 7-1/4" and 7-5/8" marks, just to show the size (less than 1/16" across)

Another pair are a little clearer in this one:

Appreciate any help, and please excuse my stave ignorance ???

No problem at all :) Just ignore pins that small. Elm can handle that; most woods can. Try to avoid putting such a pin at the edge of the bow, but anywhere else is just fine.

If you are still worried you can add a rawhide or other backing for insurance.

Yeah rawhide was plan B, soon as i get some.  I think i'll try a stave without and see how that goes.  Got 4 of these in the works.

Thanks guys again for the input!

I usually dont worry about pins that small. If You knock the top off of them and are worried about them just coat em in a little superglue.
