Locust stave advice

Hey guys---

Neighbor just stopped by, I’m making a bow for his son, wanted to know if I’d like to cut some wood for fence posts.  They just bought a tract and need to clear it for berries.  Quite a bit of black locust.  Now—since there have been so many postings on black locust lately I’m thinking that a few fence posts will wind up in my shop.

Question-I’ve read a lot of past posts on preparing black locust staves—if I head out to cut in the next few weeks—what do you experienced fellows recommend for preparing staves.  I can’t work them until we are off from milking from December to February.

I do nothing more than split and seal ends Ron.

Split, seal the ends and put to dry.
--OR--
Split, seal the ends, remove bark AND sapwood and get them to near floortiller dimensions. Dries in a few months.

Cut them extra long, split and leave to dry.  Since I plan cut off the split ends, I dont worry too much about sealing the ends.  But they will take a long time to dry.

For quicker drying  -  split, remove bark and most sap wood, thin the middle and seal both the ends and the back, leave for 3 months to dry and Bobs your uncle.  When ready to work, chase a ring and go.
