knox for backing ?

hey guys.i have heard that you can use knox gelatin in place of hide glue.i have already ordered real hide glue because i didn't trust it.i am wanting to hear what you guys think.let me in on your expirences.thanks in advace,Steve

I have used it with sinew a few times.  I had one failure, but that was my fault.  I used oil while heat bending the wood and I didn't degrease the bow good enough.  The sinew came loose.  I degreased the bow and backed it again with the knox and it has been fine ever since.  In the TBB vol. 1 they rate it very strong.  I think it was the second or third best glue they tested.

thanks osage.i have tons of the stuff.i use it on sinew for wrapping arrows and it holds good.i was a little uneasy using it for rawhide or sinew on my bows.thanks again buddy,Steve

That has been my experience with it.  You might want to see if anybody else gives their opionion.  I have a lot of sinew scraps I can send to you if you ever want to try to make your own glue.  I want to give that a try one of these days.

I've always had great luck with Knox gelatin as well as generic versions. 

I've made my own hide glues as well using sinew scraps.  I prefer the baking method since I don't have to watch the pot so close.  Put your sinew scraps in an oven approved baking dish, cover with distilled water (not necessary, but why add minerals that might weaken the glue), put the cover on the dish, and put in the oven at the lowest temp it will operate at.  6 hours is good, 12 is better.  Just check once in a while and add more distilled water as needed to keep the sinew covered.  Strain thru cheesecloth or a fine wire mesh strainer into a shallow pan and let cool. 

I usually freeze it then, but in the past I have cut it in very thin strips and put it in a cool place with a fan on it dry it out.  If you choose to freeze it you don't have to putz with re-hydrating!

 the Knox Gelatin works exelent for backing bow. It holds up and is very strong. I have never had a failure. Now a days I use that exclusively. The first sizing layer should be runny so it penetrates the wood. the only problem i see with knox is that it gels quickly as oppose to hide glue which takes time. There are other brands which gel slower and I prefer those just because of that. Good luck with your bow
