Made another knife sheath (and another!)
« on: November 06, 2011, 08:56:27 pm »
Just finished up making this sheath for a friend (I didn't make the knife though!).  I made it in exchange for a pair of rattler skins.  This is only the second one I've made, so I'm glad it turned out to be a good fit for the knife.  We got our first snow of the winter last night, so I used it for a backdrop :)

If we can't help each other what is the point of being here?

very nice sheath and leather work. I always wondered how they got the sheaths to fold so easily. way cool.

Thanks guys!

Ronnie, I can't remember what type of knife it is, but it's a couple generations old anyway.

Eric - I'm not sure if scoring the fold on the inside is a common practice, but I figured I'd give it a whirl and it seemed to help.

Madcrow - I just checked out your site, you make a fine looking blade :)

I think scoring the fold is a common practice, I do it and have seen others as well. Very nice job by the way, turned out great!

Yep, scoring the leather like that is a common practice for sheaths.  That one turned out great!  I really like it.

nice sheath, you do great work. back when i did a lot of leather work i used a skiveing knife, i'd fold it backwards a little and use the knife like a drawknife, gives nice smooth bends, Bub

Thanks for all the nice comments guys, I appreciate them all.

Adam, if you want to wait a couple days, I should be able to drop yours off along with this one.

Medicinewheel - I'm not sure what kind of knife it is.  It belongs to a friend of adb's actually.  Maybe he can tell us.

That's a good tip bubs.  I was just afraid of going too thin because this leather is only around 4 or 5 oz. to begin with.

Thanks Lane, I appreciate it :)

Well I finished up a second sheath for this trade.  This one is pretty similar, the only real differences are that I stitched the belt loop on this one rather than riveting it (it occurred to me that the rivets could scratch the knife handle inside the sheath), it's carried on the right side, it's a bit darker, and I used a new "pebble" stamp on the background area.  Here are some pics:

Here's a close up of the pebble stamp.  I think it's my new favorite backgrounder!

And a shot of them both together:

Thanks for looking!
