primitive strings
« on: November 07, 2011, 03:52:04 am »
I am shooting a 50# hickory, 68" nock to nock @ 27". I'm using 8 strands of irish linen on a continuous loop. How durable is sinew or rawhide in comparison to the linen. I allready know I will lose performance by switching, but i want to be totaly primitive. My nocks are very smooth and string friendly. If all strings are well designed, which would outlast the other under normal circumstances?

Donald,

The Traditional Bowyers Bible Vol. 2 has a 70 page chapter called Strings by Tim Baker that is exactly what you're looking for.  Try your local library, our's has it.  Hope this helps, dpgratz

Seeing how linen is one of the oldest fibers used in Europe, I would call it primitive.
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

Thanks! interesting video. Looks like this would be easier than twisting sinew. Will be a late winter project for sure. Thanks again Sadiejane!
