Cut In Shelf Question

As Iv'e never made a bow with a shelf, what is a good measurement above center to cut in the shelf. 4inch handle if that matters.

Never thought of it that way. Let me go measure.................... About an inch from the high part of the shelf to the bow center. I go about 1 3/8 " above that to start the cut-out.

By the high part of the shelf I mean the tiny bit the arrow actually rests on.

I do like bubby does.  Get a comfortable grip and mark it with a pencil.

I do what Bubby said.  That ERC I just posted is the first bow I've done without a cut in shelf, so I kinda had to ponder what to do with that floppy rest.  I grabbed it like I had been shooting it, stuck the floppy right on top of my knuckle, and lightly marked it.  With the others, I've just shot it a bit so see where it's happiest with the arrow location, marked it, and cut away anywhere from just a bump as a glorified locator to a full blown radiused shelf if there is room.

I use a 28" pencil with flights on the end .
That's to say when I'm adding an arrow plate (I don't do shelves... unless the wife wants me to put some up...) I shoot a few arrows and look for the mark on the bow, you can even rub the pencil on the side of the arrow to help show up the exact arrow pass..

Ok, still learning here. I cut in the shelf before the bow goes on the tree and tiller to it. Ain't saying that's right ,just how I do it.
Always figgered that if the shelf damaged the structural integrity I wanted to know it as soon as possible. And with the shelf in place it is a simple matter to locate the bow on the tree.
Just how I do it.

  I do'nt do measurement I cut my self as soon as I cut my stave down to simi bow form and find where my hadle will be. I find which way will give my bow closer to center shot. Cut my shelf in the get my limb lenth. As a I take my limbs and handle down I shape in the shelf better. And change it as I get the bow closer to being done.
