Maple Wood Selfbow
« on: September 08, 2011, 06:10:18 pm »
Hello bowyers. I'm new to this forum and very new to bow making. I have just finished shaping two staves out of a wood that I think was maple and another out of a less sweet yellower wood (identity unknown to me). After one day the maple stave has lost lots of water already and when I test it's bend against the wall it seems to bend about two inches but I don't want to push it too far. The other stave gives about an inch. I'm not sure what I'm asking here but does that seem about right? Are these woods okay for bowmaking?

Well first of all welcome to primitive archer.  :)  glad you could join us.  8)

First of all the maple. Do you know what kind of maple it is? Pictures? Because there is a difference between sugar(hard)maple and the other maples like red or silver etc....

Not sure what kind of yellower wood you mean of. Can you give a leaf, bark, and better description of it. Or better yet post some pictures and im sure someone can I.d. it here.

And where's your general location? Answer these and folks will be able to better help ya out.

And you can bend green wood a few inches and do no harm to it.

Welcome to the looney bin >:D

Trees!  I'm not scared  okay I went outside and got some pics and had to rush because the mosquitoes were making a banquet out of me. This is what I have. The one with the house isn't the actual tree that I cut but it looked exactly like it and I tried to get a close up of those leaves but as I said the mosquitoes are breeding right now in Sussex Virginia... the close up of the darker green leaves are from the tree of the "yellower wood". The ring pattern that I'm showing with the doggy in the background is that yellower wood. The wood shavings are from the wood that I thought was maple and so was the brownish fuzzy looking wood. Hope I'm being clear! and I actually have to decrease my file size...heres one picture. Maybe not. When I figure this out I'll be back....

Yes I do actually! And it seems like even I can't open them from the page. I don't know how to post these pictures without my file being too large...

The second pics are some type of Locust I would say.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

And yes, We here at PA are a little nuts...well most of us....ok some...Fine it's just me! I keep seeing bows in trees, then it hits me like a train...CARVE IT, SHOOT IT, SKIN IT, COOK IT, EAT IT...OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!! I do bite...Ask my dog. He has got to learn to stat back when I clean game. >:( ;D >:D
I thin I better get off now and take my meds.............

Never made one out of Locust, but know that it has been done. For what it's worth,  As far as the maple goes, I have a walnut backed/maple Molle that has done just fine by me.
But, i will defer to the experts on this site to give you the good answers. There is a lot of patient and knowledgeable folks here.
