sharpening scrapers

hey guys,what do you use for sharpening your scrapers.i don't want to buy a burnishing tool.is there another way to do it?thanks,steve

I use the uncut end near the handle of a round or halfround file,it works ok.

You can use any hard steel preferably round (older screw drivers are fairly hard) to burnish with .
But most of us are not using cabinet scrapers, just a piece of steel that is ground leaving the burr edge on it to scrape with ,to much trouble to go thru all that other work!!

A round shanked screwdriver works well.

What BG said. I have a giant hacksaw blade like goes in a motor driven hacksaw. Works Great and free to boot.

There's loads of good videos on Youtube about sharpening scapers, mind some are a bit too fiddly for thier own good.
(I use a BIG screwdriver shank).

thanks everyone.looks like i'll be using the screwdriver.the burnishing tool looks like it is just a round piece of steel shoved in a handle.i didn't want to pay the 15 bucks for it.i knew you guys would have a better way.thanks again,steve

I bought a carbide rod tool from lee valley.  Under 10$ I think, made specifically for sharpening scrapers.  I also use it to burnish bows and metal.

Might have been a gift, it really fits the profile: something you wouldn't buy but would be useful.

flat mill file then the screwdriver works just fine.

I just set the flat and lenth wise on my belt sander,never burnshed one in my life,well maybe one and it was way to much trouble. Takes about 10 seconds on the sander,worn out belt works best.

I just use a large mill file and run the scraper lengthwise down the file a couple of times. That puts a bur on either side. Of course it takes a bit off the scraper but a very minimal amount.

that's what i did PatM.i ran it down a file,then burnished with the screwdriver.worked like a charm.thanks guys,steve
