Got a question about Urac
« on: May 16, 2011, 04:28:08 pm »
Has anybody ever used this to repair plastic?
I know........before you start in on me, it's for my small 2 man bass buggy fishin boat. I ran over the edge of it the other day while brush hawgin and put a nast crack/gouge in the side of it. :-\ :-[ :'(
I figure that this stuff dries so hard and permanent that I might be able to repair my screw up with it and glue another piece of plastic over top of the damage?
But I don't know what it does to plastic? I do know that guys use it on phenolic for tip overlays, but not sure if that's the same type material?

Any immediate responses needed, I gotta get my bassin' on!!  8)

Duct tape...........lots of duct tape.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Plastic Weld works like Urac and is a lot cheaper. If it's made from that molded plastic like kayaks, then they sell a kit at kayak stores that is made just for that.

Thanks mullet, appreciate the info but I got plenty of Urac on hand so it's not a big deal to use some of it. I just wanted to make sure it didn't eat the plastic. Some resins don't mix well with certain other plastic compounds and will melt right through them. I just hope I can patch it up good enough to stay afloat! These little 2 man bass buggies are up to about $600 bucks for a cheap one now.........Ouch!
I'd like to get a few more years out of this one if I could.

The problem is, epoxy resins won't bond with poly plastic for very long. It would be cheaper to pile on Duck Tape. A hot glue gun would work better. It is the same kind of plastic.  And those kits cost about $20 and have a mesh that melts down into the plastic.

How about this stuff?
Looks like a winner to me, I might order this kit and give it a go.

I would try a small test area. That will give you a for sure answer ;)

I'm still not sure it is the same plastic. There is a big difference in PVC and poly plastic, (milk jugs). That stuff is probably, gound up PVC and you mix it with glue. ???
